IOM Director General William Lacy Swing visits Finland

Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) William Lacy Swing will visit Finland on 6–7 November 2016 and meet Foreign Minister Timo Soini. They will be discussing global migration trends and the current migration flows in Europe. Other topics on the meeting agenda are the follow-up process of the UN Summit for Refugees and Migrants held in September and the collaboration between the IOM and Finland.

During his visit, Director General Swing will also meet President of the Republic Sauli Niinistö and Minister of the Interior Paula Risikko. He will also pay a visit to a reception centre.

William Lacy Swing has been the IOM Director General since October 2008. He was re-elected to his second term in 2013. This is his second visit to Finland as IOM Director General.

The IOM is an intergovernmental organisation established in 1951 that currently performs a wide range of tasks relating to migration. The IOM joined the UN system in September 2016. It has 165 Member States and offices in over 100 countries.

The IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of both migrants and governments. It assists in the search for practical solutions to migration problems and provides humanitarian assistance to migrants in need. Finland has been an IOM Member State since 1991, and the IOM Country Office in Finland was established in 1993. In Finland the IOM activities and projects focus on five areas: assisted voluntary return and reintegration support, migration and development, integration, resettlement of refugees and counter trafficking.
