Glossary of support for learning published
The Translation and Language Division at the Prime Minister’s Office has compiled a glossary of terms on support for learning and its provision in Finland.
The glossary was created following the reform of the Finnish system of support for learning across all levels of education. The reform was led by the Ministry of Education and Culture.
The glossary explains new terms introduced through changes to support for learning. These changes relate to the Act on Early Childhood Education and Care (540/2018) and the Act on Primary and Lower Secondary Education (628/1998). The English translations of these acts can be found in Finlex, the online legal database, but they do not yet include the new terminology.
The glossary provides terms in Finnish and English. It aims to make English terminology consistent for professionals working in this field in Finland. The glossary follows international guidance on non-discriminatory language.
Many of the English terms have been validated by education and language specialists as part of ongoing updates to the Glossary of Education. These terms will also eventually appear in the fourth edition of the Glossary of Education.
You can find the new glossary on the Government’s Glossaries and Guidance website: Glossary of Support for Learning.
