New coordination and monitoring group to support assessment of Sámi Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s recommendations
Today, in cooperation with the Sámi Parliament and the Skolt Sámi Siida Council, the Government appointed a coordination and monitoring group to support the work of the parliamentary working group tasked with assessing the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Concerning the Sámi People. The group will support the work of the parliamentary working group and ensure effective cooperation between key actors.
The parliamentary working group appointed in November 2025 is responsible for formulating a shared vision of what measures should be taken based on the recommendations put forth in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s final report.
The task of the coordination and monitoring group is to support the work of the parliamentary working group in assessing the recommendations, to coordinate cooperation between the parliamentary working group, the Sámi Parliament and the Skolt Sámi Siida Council, and to monitor the work of various actors to promote and implement the recommendations. In addition, the group will ensure that the information in the final report is disseminated effectively within the central government and in Finnish society.
“The work of the parliamentary working group is off to a good start. The newly appointed coordination and monitoring group will ensure that the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s recommendations are discussed in close cooperation with the Sámi people,” said Prime Minister Petteri Orpo.
“The appointment of the coordination and monitoring group is the result of long-term, constructive dialogue with the state. The group will ensure that the Sámi people and the state are equally positioned to promote the implementation of the recommendations put forth by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and that the information produced by the Commission is consistently disseminated to the central government. This cooperation body will give us a shared table where we can move forward as part of a broader parliamentary configuration,” said Tuomas Aslak Juuso, Acting President of the Sámi Parliament.
“It is our hope that the appointment of the coordination and monitoring group will ensure that the Skolt Sámi Siida Council is included in assessing the results of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s work and in the further measures taken to implement the recommendations,” said Skolt Saami Elder Veikko Feodoroff.
The coordination and monitoring group consists of representatives from the Sámi Parliament, the Skolt Sámi Siida Council, the Prime Minister’s Office and the Ministry of Justice. Risto Artjoki, State Secretary to the Prime Minister, has been appointed to serve as chair.
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission submitted its final report to the Government, the Sámi Parliament and the Skolt Sámi Siida Council on 4 December 2025.
