New content added to Government Termbank Valter
The Translation and Language Division of the Prime Minister’s Office has updated the Glossary of Legislative Terms and Phrases with new concepts and legal expressions and has made changes to some earlier recommendations. The glossary is available in the Government Termbank Valter and as a separate PDF file on the Government’s Glossaries and guidance website and in Finlex.
The most important Finnish term in the Glossary of Municipal Administration, ‘kunta’, should now be translated into English as ‘municipality’. ‘Local government’ is no longer a suitable term, because local government now includes wellbeing services counties in addition to municipalities. Terms containing the word ‘kunta’ should now be translated using phrases with ‘municipality’ or ‘municipal’. With this in mind, the English name of the glossary has been changed from Glossary of Local Government to Glossary of Municipal Administration and many recommendations on English terminology have been updated. Some of the content of the glossary has also been updated in the Government Termbank Valter.
The content of the Glossary of Legislative Terms and Phrases and the Glossary of Municipal Administration will be published later as open data on the avoindata.fi website.
The Government Termbank Valter has also been updated to include the Glossary of Continuous Learning drafted under the leadership of the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment. The Glossary of Internal Security drafted earlier under the leadership of the Ministry of the Interior has also been added to Valter. Both glossaries provide translation equivalents in Finnish, Swedish and English. The translation equivalents were compiled by the Translation and Language Division of the Prime Minister’s Office. These glossaries are also available in the Terminologies tool of the interoperability platform and in the Finnish Terminology Centre’s TEPA Term Bank.
