On Wednesday 14 July, a panel discussion organised in collaboration with the Nordic Council of Ministers will address the current state of Nordic cooperation.

This year at the Foreign Ministry's program at the SuomiAreena the focus is on climate change and Nordic cooperation.

Is climate leap still possible?

Despite the period of temporary calm worldwide, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the amount of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere continues to rise and climate change is still the most serious challenge for our generation.

The climate leap will be examined in light of the targets of the Paris Agreement. How can we slow down climate change, and is it still possible to reach the targets? How can we get influential actors on board? The panel will offer perspectives on these questions and a look at the current situation in global climate policy forums.

In addition, the panel will especially consider the role that Finland could play in resolving global challenges caused by climate change. These themes will be discussed by top experts in their fields, Minister for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto, Minister for Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade Ville Skinnari, Henrietta Moon, founder of Carbo Culture, which makes functional biocarbons from waste, and Chairperson of the Finnish Climate Change Panel Markku Ollikainen.

The climate leap – Who should take the leap and how far should it go? Panel discussion

The discussion will be webcast live on the MTV website.

Nordic cooperation after the pandemic

The event on Wednesday will focus on the state of Nordic cooperation in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. In summer 2019, before the outbreak of the pandemic, Nordic ministers adopted their common vision: The Nordic region will become the most sustainable and integrated region in the world by 2030. However, due to the pandemic, it has not been possible to adhere even to the “most self-evident Nordic values”, such as freedom of movement in the Nordic countries. What is the current state of Nordic cooperation? What have we learned from the coronavirus period? How can the Nordic countries proceed, together, towards a greener, more competitive and socially more sustainable Nordic region? What needs to be done to ensure that the Nordic countries can lead the way towards the green transition?
